What Does a UPI ID Mean, and How Do I Make One or Change It Within an App?
The United Payments Interface (UPI), which was introduced in 2016, is a fantastic tool for facilitating daily payments for regular consumers.
According to data, Indian consumers now favor UPI over other payment methods. Cards and online banking were significantly outperformed by UPI both during and after the COVID-19 lockdown.

This is significant because UPI is seamless and user-friendly. With Razorpay bringing the UPI intent flow to iOS devices as well, the UPI intent flow's high usage on Android devices is only going to grow.
While such features can be very helpful for small businesses, using UPI payment apps can also benefit regular consumers. This is primarily due to the wide variety of features and applications they have.
And of course, UPI AutoPay, which enables customers to subscribe to goods and services using UPI AutoPay, is the next big thing in the digital payments space.
Describe UPI ID
Each customer has a unique UPI ID, which is used to facilitate payments between customers and merchants. It provides a Virtual Payments Address that senders can use to enter payments into your account. You must first download any app of your choosing and register on it in order to create your own VPA or UPI ID.
What is an example UPI ID?
A unique identifier for bank accounts in India is called UPI.
For instance, abcdef@ybl
90876543@okicici
Your name, email address, or phone number can all be "abcdef," and your bank's initials are "@ybl and @okicici."
Characteristics of UPI payments
UPI payment apps provide a straightforward resolution to a very basic issue.
The following are some characteristics of this payment method:
- First and foremost, one of the most important characteristics of UPI is its reliability as it was introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The issue with using third-party payment apps to facilitate online payments is frequently the possibility of financial loss caused by even the smallest change in internet connectivity. Though these applications help users get their money back and provide excellent customer service, many times the problems are with the website or portal they are used on. Customers who use UPI have much more control over how their money is transferred and do not have to worry about it getting lost in the process.
- Real-time transfers: Another crucial aspect of UPI is that all transfers take place in real-time. When customers click the send button, their beneficiary quickly receives the payments. As a result, simple and practical daily tasks like grocery shopping, taking a car or cab home from work, or repaying a friend after borrowing money are all possible. Customers can easily and without hesitation enter the digital economy thanks to the straightforward 2-step process used in these payments.
- Broadening participation: UPI doesn't always rely on the internet UPI provides the option to conduct transactions without a smartphone or functional internet, though this functionality depends on the payment app used. Customers only need to send particular text messages to start the transactions in order to do this. As a result, people from all social groups can access the digital world. Many payment apps make it easier for many people to participate in this revolution because they provide instructions in local languages.
- No minimum transaction threshold exists for UPI transactions. With this method of payment, you can send payments as little as one rupee. As a result, those who regularly transact business with vendors or merchants find the idea of using digital transactions to be much more appealing. UPI payments do not currently have a transaction fee, unlike NEFT and RTGS payments. This increases the convenience of using these payment methods overall.
A UPI ID creation process
These steps can be used to register your bank account and mobile number with UPI-compatible apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, Mobikwik, etc. It may be in any bank app that supports UPI or the Bharath Interface for Money (BHIM) app.

- Step 5: To keep all of your transactions secure, you must create a UPI ID and a 4- or 6-digit PIN. You are now prepared to move forward with your UPI transactions.
