एक बार कथाकार अपने चचेरे भाई-बहनों के साथ पास के गाँव में शादी में गयी। वह एकाध दिन के लिये गयी थी लेकिन एक सप्ताह तक वहां ठहर गयी। जब वह अपने गाँव वापस आयी उसने अपनी दादी को दु:खी पाया। वह हैरान हो गयी। उसने कठिन से कठिन हालात में भी अपनी दादी को कभी रोते-चीखते नहीं देखा था। दादी ने अपनी पोती को अपनी कहानी सुनायी। जब वह बहुत ही कम आयु की लड़की थी कि उसकी माँ चल बसी। उसकी देखभाल और मार्गदर्शन के लिये कोई भी नहीं था। उसके पिता ने कर से शादी कर ली। उन दिनों लड़कियों को शिक्षा देने की कोई भी परवाह नहीं करता था। इसलिये वह कभी भी पाठशाला नहीं गयी। उसकी बहुत कम आयु में शादी हो गयी और बच्चे हो गये। बाद में उसके पोते-पोतियाँ भी हो गये।

स्कूल न जाने का पश्चाताप
दादी अपने सभी बच्चों के लिए खाना पकाने और उन्हें खिलाने में बहुत प्रसन्नता अनुभव करती थी। कभी-कभी वह स्कूल न जाने पर पश्चाताप करती थी। उसने सबक सीख लिया था। इसीलिये उसने यह सुनिश्चित किया कि उसके बच्चे और पोते-पोतियाँ अच्छी तरह पढ़े। जब कथाकार बाहर गयी हुई थी तो कर्मवीर आम दिनों की तरह ही आया। उसने पत्रिका खोली। वहाँ जो कुछ लिखा था वह बिल्कुल ही समझ नहीं पायी। उसने स्वयं को पहली बार इतना अधिक आश्रित और असहाय अनुभव किया।

दादी ने अगले दिन से ही कन्नड़ की वर्णमाला सीखने का निर्णय लिया। उसने बहुत कठिन परिश्रम करने का फैसला किया। उसने दशहरा के दौरान सरस्वती पूजा के दिन को अंतिम तिथि के रूप में रखा। उस दिन वह अपने आप ही एक उपन्यास को पढ़ पायेगी। वह स्वतंत्र होना चाहती थी। कथाकार को उसके चेहरे पर दृढ़ता का भाव दिखाई दिया। कर भी वह अपनी दादी के निर्णय पर हँसी। उसने दादी का मजाक उड़ाया। लेकिन उसकी दादी सिर्फ मुस्करा दी और उसने कुछ भी नहीं कहा।
