Aadhaar Data Update - Unique Identification Authority of India
It is imperative to have a registered mobile number in order to access Aadhaar Online Services.
You have the option to verify the mobile number declared during enrolment or the most recent update of Aadhaar details.
If you did not register your mobile number during the enrolment process for Aadhaar, it is necessary for you to visit a Permanent Enrolment Centre in order to register it.
Aadhaar plays a crucial role in various services such as Government and Non-Government Services, Subsidy Benefits, Pensions, Scholarships, Social Benefits, Banking services, Insurance services, Taxation services, Education, Employment, Healthcare, and more. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the resident's Aadhaar data stored in the CIDR is accurate and up-to-date.
The need for updating demographic data may arise due to various reasons, including changes in life events such as marriage, which may lead to changes in basic demographic details such as name and address. Additionally, migration to a new location may result in changes to address and mobile number. Residents may also wish to update their relative's details due to events such as marriage or the death of a relative. Moreover, personal reasons such as changing mobile numbers or email addresses may also prompt residents to request changes. Service delivery platforms may also require residents to update their details and add their mobile numbers to the CIDR. Furthermore, errors made during the enrolment process may necessitate changes in demographic data, particularly in the "DoB/Age" and "Gender" fields. It is also possible that a resident who speaks language "A" may get enrolled by an operator who speaks language "B," resulting in a different language of enrolment from the resident's preferred choice. In such cases, all demographic information on the Aadhaar letter must be updated in the new local language. UIDAI may also assess the availability and quality of documents such as proof of identity (POI) and proof of address (POA) collected during enrolment or updates. Based on this assessment, residents may be notified to update their demographic information and submit the required documents.
The need for biometric updates may arise in various situations. Firstly, it is recommended that residents update their biometric data every 10 years starting from the age of 15 at the time of enrolment. Events like accidents or diseases may lead to exceptions in biometric data. As the use of Aadhaar authentication services becomes more widespread, residents may also request biometric updates due to authentication failures, also known as false rejects. These failures can occur when the biometric data was captured incorrectly or of poor quality during the enrolment process. With advancements in technology, it is now possible to capture better quality biometrics in the CIDR. UIDAI may verify the quality of biometrics captured during enrolment or updates and establish a threshold. Residents whose biometrics fall below this threshold level may be notified by UIDAI to update their biometrics.
The Aadhaar details that can be updated include demographic information such as name, address, date of birth/age, gender, mobile number, email address, relationship status, and information sharing consent. Biometric information, such as iris, fingerprints, and facial photograph, can also be updated. UIDAI's update process accepts a wide range of proof of identity (PoI) and proof of address (PoA) documents. Methods of Update
1. Online Update
Residents have the option to update their address through the convenient Self-Service online mode. By accessing the portal and logging in with their Aadhaar number and registered mobile number, residents can directly submit their update request. To ensure authentication, a One-Time Password (OTP) is sent to the resident's registered mobile number. In order to complete the update process, residents must upload supporting Proof of Address (POA) documents, which will be verified by a Verifier at UIDAI's Update back-office. Please note that this service requires the resident to have a registered mobile number linked to their Aadhaar.
2. Visiting a Permanent Enrolment Centre
Residents also have the option to visit a Permanent Enrolment Centre to request demographic or biometric updates. At these centres, an operator will assist residents in submitting their update request and collecting the necessary documentary evidence. The Verifier will also perform document verification during the request placement. UIDAI currently offers three methods for Assisted Updates:
a. Update Client Standard

Fields: All biometric and demographic fields, including local language, can be updated.
Identity Authentication: Biometric verification will be conducted at the back-end.
Document Verification
- Verification will be conducted for fields that require documentary evidence.
- Verification will be performed by a verifier appointed by UIDAI/Registrars present at the Enrolment/Update Centre.
- The verification procedure should align with the recommendations of the DDSVP Committee during the enrolment process.
Form Filling and Acknowledgement
- The operator, as requested by the resident, will handle form filling, addressing any spelling, language, or transliteration issues. The operator will provide a biometric sign-off for each update request.
Upon completion, the resident will receive an acknowledgement receipt with a unique Update Request Number (URN) for tracking purposes.
b. Update Client Lite (UCL)
Fields: All demographic fields, including a photo and local language, can be updated.
Identity Authentication: The resident's biometrics will be authenticated.
- The operator, as requested by the resident, will handle form filling. The resident will receive an acknowledgement receipt with a unique Update Request Number (URN) for tracking purposes. The operator will also provide a biometric sign-off for each update request.
c. Update through AUA Point of Presence
This mode is specifically designed for select Registrars who also act as Authentication User Agencies (AUA). UIDAI may provide an application or APIs for the update process. The chosen Registrars will be responsible for collecting, generating, possessing, and managing the particular demographic field data as custodians.
Fields: Demographic categories
Identity Verification: The resident's identity will be verified through the use of biometric authentication on the AUA device. UIDAI may opt to include other authentication factors, such as mobile OTP, if necessary. Each update request will require the operator to provide biometric confirmation, so they must possess an Aadhaar. The authentication standards set by UIDAI will apply to the device(s) used.
Document Validation: Update requests will be accepted by UIDAI based on the Registrar's verification process and Resident Authentication. In order to maintain an audit trail, electronic or scanned copies of documents may be collected digitally. These document copies can either be captured and received with every resident request or provided by the Registrar in batches that correspond to the Update Request Numbers, Date, and time.
Completion of Form and Receipt
- This task will be carried out by the Operator designated by the Registrar (employee or outsourced personnel) using a biometric authentication-enabled device, such as a Micro-ATM. The resident will receive an acknowledgement receipt containing an Update Request Number (URN) that can be tracked. The format of the acknowledgement may vary depending on the nature of the request, including options such as a printed receipt or an SMS/email. The API will be equipped with the capability to generate both electronic and printed receipts. If desired, the Registrar may choose to provide printed receipts upon completion of the update request.
