As a result, leading fashion shows in India now hold rigorous auditions, where panel members including photographers, fashion designers, choreographers, and other industry experts assess the applicants. So, being a model is no "cakewalk" anymore. Praveen Bhat shares key insights on what it takes to become a successful model and make it to the runway and endorsements.

The Model You Want to Be:

Runway Model: Female models usually need to be at least 5’9 and male models between 5’11-6’2. They should also have perfect catwalk training and an ideal physique.

Print Model: For editorial shoots, a height of 5’7 with an appealing personality and photogenic looks are usually required.

Swimwear Model: Female models should have well-developed breasts and toned hips, while male models should have broad shoulders and a slim waist.

Promotional Model: These models are often hired by companies to promote their brands and interact with their customers in events, clubs, or grocery stores.

Knowledge and Grooming: Simply being good-looking will not guarantee success as a model. Social awareness and knowledge about the fashion world are essential, as well as having unique looks and characteristics that fit the specific job requirements. The modeling industry is highly competitive, and perseverance and patience are key to success.

Know Your Vitals: Modeling requires knowledge of body measurements such as height, weight, shoe size, and clothing measurements like shoulder, chest, waist, and thighs. It's also important to know your personal stats, such as hair color, eye color, skin tone, and skin type.

Professional Touch and Shot: Getting a portfolio shoot can be expensive, but it's a worthwhile investment as it gives you a better idea of your look and can help you snag an interview. Professional photography can also give you the edge you need to succeed in the glamourous but highly competitive world of modeling.

Hire a well-known photographer (preferably a fashion photographer) to do your portfolio shoot. Once you have a sufficient amount of photos, compile them into a portfolio or "book." Bring your portfolio to castings or agencies.

When visiting an agency, bring your snapshots and/or portfolio. They may ask you to walk or pose, take a headshot or measurements. Remember to be professional, polite, and courteous. Treat everyone with respect as you never know who they know or what recommendation they might give of you. Being a model doesn't give you the right to be snobbish or pompous.
