Revamp Your Train Itinerary: Customize Your Name and Boarding Station on Tickets

Are you aware that you can modify the passenger name or the boarding station on your IRCTC train ticket after you have booked it? The process is hassle-free and we have listed the details below.

Boarding Station and Passenger Name can be altered at Reservation Offices as governed by railway regulations for face-to-face booked tickets.

Changing the Passenger Name

If you have a confirmed train ticket but do not want to cancel it, you can transfer the ticket to a family member with permission from Indian Railways. Read on for more information.

As per regulations, a berth or seat reserved in the name of a passenger can only be used by that person and is non-transferable. Nonetheless, the following circumstances allow for a change of the name of a passenger who has a berth or seat reserved in their name:

• - If the passenger is a government servant carrying out their duty, and the appropriate authority makes a written request 24 hours before the scheduled departure.
• - If the passenger makes a written request 24 hours before the scheduled departure asking for the reservation made in their name to be transferred to a family member such as father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband, or wife.
• - If the passengers are students in a recognized educational institution, and the head of the institution makes a written request 48 hours before the scheduled departure asking for the reservation in the name of any student to be transferred to any other student in the same institution.
• - If the passengers are a part of a marriage party, and the person deemed to be the head of the party makes a written request 48 hours before the scheduled departure asking for the reservation made in the name of any party member to be transferred to any other person.

- If the passengers are a group of cadets from the National Cadet Corps, and any officer who is the head of the group makes a written request at least 24 hours before the departure asking for the reservation made in the name of any cadet to be transferred to any other cadet. However, exceeding 10% of the total group strength will not be permitted.

Passengers must submit a written request to the nearest Railway Reservation office at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure. They must also produce a printout of the Electronic Reservation Slip, photo identity proof, and evidence of the blood relation to be modified. In the case of a government servant proceeding on duty, and requests made in writing 24 hours before the scheduled departure, the name may be changed. However, please note that changing the name only once is allowed and exceeding 10% of the total group strength is not permitted.

To ensure a smooth ticketing experience on IRCTC Online or for manual reservations at railway stations, it is important to verify the details on the booking ticket before making the payment. The name on the ticket and the ID proof should match exactly, otherwise, the passenger may be considered ticketless. The requirement for availing the service is a confirmed ticket, and only the Chief Reservation Supervisor at designated stations is authorized to change the name of a reserved ticket holder.

Under certain circumstances, a passenger can transfer their confirmed ticket to a family member, with a written request 24 hours prior to the scheduled departure. If a passenger is part of a wedding party, then the confirmed ticket can be transferred with a written request by the head of the group, 48 hours before departure. A government employee can also transfer their confirmed ticket with a written request 24 hours prior to departure, whereas in the case of students, the head of the institution must approve a written request made 48 hours before departure, enabling another student from the same institution to use the ticket. This option is also extended to the National Cadet Corps, with a written request from the head of the group 24 hours before departure.

Changing the boarding station is also possible before or after ticket booking, with some exceptions. For instance, if the boarding station changes within 24 hours of departure, no refund is permissible in normal circumstances, except for specific scenarios such as train cancellations, non-attachment of coach, or late-running train of more than three hours. Boarding station change is not allowed if the ticket is seized, with the VIKALP option, for I-Tickets or current booking tickets. However, if a passenger changes the boarding station, they lose their right to board the train from the original boarding point and may have to pay a penalty. Changes to the boarding station of a counter ticket must be made before charting, while for I-Tickets, it can only be changed once printed.

To modify the Boarding Point of an e-ticket, you must select the Transaction Type option as 'Boarding Point Change'. After that, furnish the PNR Number and Train number along with Captcha and then select the check box to acknowledge that you have read the rules and procedures. Once you have submitted the required details, an OTP will be sent to your mobile number that was provided at the time of booking. Enter the received OTP and click Submit. After your OTP is validated, PNR details will be displayed on the screen. Check the details on the screen and then select the New Boarding Station from the Boarding Point list. To submit your new details, click Submit. PNR Details with the New Boarding Point will be displayed on the screen.

Notably, you are permitted to make changes in your boarding point at two stages:

Here's how you can make changes in Name and Boarding Station for Train Tickets: First, log in by entering your User name and Password. After that, provide your desired 'From – To' station, 'Date of Journey', and 'Class' of travel. Then, click on Find train button to get the train list. Choose the train from the train lists and click the Book Now button. Once on the Passengers input page, select the Change Boarding Station option, and a pop-up window appears with the list of stations between the selected train route. From that list, select your desired boarding point. After selecting the station, the updated Boarding station will be displayed on the right side ticket window.

To change the Boarding Station, you need to log in by entering your User name and Password. Then, go to MY ACCOUNT: My Transactions: Booked Ticket History. Select the ticket for which you want to change the Boarding Station and select the Change Boarding Point button. After this, a pop-up window with the list of stations between the selected train route will appear. Choose your desired boarding point from the list. At this point, the system will ask for confirmation, so click 'OK' to confirm the change of the ticket's boarding point. You'll get a success alert message if the boarding station is changed successfully. The corresponding messages related to the boarding point's update will be sent to the mobile number you provided at the time of booking.

Indian Railways give you the facility to transfer your confirmed ticket to family members such as father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband, or wife. To finalize their journey, travelers must bring their ‘Electronic Reservation Slip’ printout and an original photo identity proof for one of the passengers listed on the ticket to the nearest Railway Reservation Office. This must be done at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled train departure, in accordance with the current guidelines of the Railway.

For e-ticket holders, it is feasible to modify their boarding station online up to 24 hours prior to the train's scheduled departure.
